How Persistence and the Right Training Opened Doors for Yaaqub
Yaaqub Bin Zulkifli’s journey into healthcare took an unconventional route. After leaving Pre-University without graduating, he spent a year working as a food delivery rider, taking an e-commerce course, and even teaching conversational Malay. But despite trying different jobs, he felt lost.
“I wanted a career with meaning, but I didn’t know where to start.” Yaaqub recalls.
After months of reflection and speaking with people in the healthcare sector, Yaaqub felt a pull towards the industry. “I didn’t know why—it just felt like my calling.” That instinct led him to enrol in the SCTP WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing) with Perioperative Specialisation at HMI Institute in 2023.
Rejected Five Times, but Never Gave Up
Determined to build a career in nursing, Yaaqub applied to ITE’s nursing programme—but was rejected four times.
Undeterred, he enrolled in HMI Institute’s SCTP programme to gain relevant skills and experience. “I told myself that if I couldn’t go straight into nursing school, I would take another path to get there,” he says.
Yet, Yaaqub refused to quit. He applied one last time—and on his sixth attempt, he was finally accepted into ITE College East’s Higher NITEC in Nursing in late 2023.
Building a Strong Foundation at HMI Institute
The SCTP programme at HMI Institute played a crucial role in Yaaqub’s development. He gained hands-on skills, practical experience, and mentorship that helped him transition smoothly into ITE’s nursing course.
One of his most memorable moments was practising procedures for the Theatre Sterile Supply Unit (TSSU) under the guidance of his lecturer, Ms Poh Yen.
“I stayed back after class to practice, and when the assessment came, she praised my efforts but reminded me, ‘Don’t fly yet ah,’” he says with a smile.
Yaaqub’s journey is just beginning. With his strong academic performance—a perfect GPA of 4.0 in his first term—he is on track for an accelerated programme. His goal is to further his studies and build a long-term career in nursing.
For those considering a career switch, Yaaqub offers this advice:
“Every expert was once a beginner. We all have to start somewhere. Ask questions, stay curious, and never give up.”
