After years of working as a nurse, Myron Lee found himself at a crossroads. His passion for understanding the human body and helping patients had always driven him, but a growing love for sports and rehabilitation sparked a new dream—to become a physiotherapist.
Today, Myron is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy. The journey is demanding but rewarding, and as a Career Conversion Programme student, he’s preparing to step confidently into his new role as a physiotherapist. Reflecting on his experience, Myron offers this advice:
“To those hesitant about entering healthcare, I encourage taking the leap. HMI Institute offers a solid foundation, and the sector provides numerous opportunities for growth through further education.”
Overcoming Setbacks and Finding Direction
Myron’s journey wasn’t without challenges. His initial application to the Singapore Institute of Technology’s physiotherapy programme was unsuccessful, and he faced uncertainty. Friends and colleagues offered mixed advice, leaving him unsure about his next step.
Rather than giving up, Myron decided to gain hands-on experience as a therapy assistant. “It was a way to learn more about the field while preparing for the next opportunity,” he recalls.
A Turning Point at HMI Institute
Myron’s journey took a decisive turn when he enrolled in the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Therapy Support) course at HMI Institute. This programme provided him with the knowledge and confidence to bridge the gap between his nursing background and his new aspirations.
The programme’s hybrid learning structure and supportive environment stood out. “The lecturers were incredibly encouraging, and my classmates came from such diverse backgrounds,” he shares. “We learned so much from each other.” Myron’s nursing experience enriched classroom discussions, while his clinical attachment at St Luke’s Hospital gave him invaluable real-world exposure to therapy support practices.
Why Healthcare is a Meaningful Career Choice
Healthcare is more than just a job; it’s a chance to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. For Myron, the pivot to physiotherapy has been about building connections, improving quality of life, and finding fulfilment in a role that aligns with his passions and skills.
If you’re contemplating a career change, Myron’s story is proof that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. With the right training and support, you can create a meaningful new chapter in your life.
