From Food Delivery Rider to an Aspiring Nurse

Yaaqub Bin Zulkifli’s journey into healthcare began with an unconventional path. After leaving Pre-University in 2021 without graduating, Yaaqub spent 2022 working as a food delivery rider, completing an e-commerce course, and teaching conversational Malay. Struggling with an identity crisis, he searched for a meaningful direction in life.

After extensive reflection, research, and conversations with acquaintances, Yaaqub felt drawn to healthcare. “I didn’t know why—it just felt like my calling,” he recalls. That intuition led him to enrol in the SCTP WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing) with Perioperative Specialisation at HMI Institute in 2023.

Rejected Five Times but Never Gave Up

One of Yaaqub’s most memorable moments during the course was practising procedures for the Theatre Sterile Supply Unit (TSSU) under the guidance of his lecturer, Ms. Poh Yen. “I stayed behind after class to practice, and when the assessment came, she praised my efforts but reminded me, ‘Don’t fly yet ah,’” he shares with a smile.

Yaaqub’s perseverance extended beyond the classroom. Rejected five times from ITE Nursing, he refused to give up. “After my fourth rejection, I decided to enrol at HMI Institute. Even after being rejected a fifth time, I applied again and was finally accepted on my sixth attempt,” he shares. His resilience paid off when he started his Higher NITEC course in Nursing at ITE College East in late 2023.

A Testament to Perseverance

Yaaqub’s time at HMI Institute, combined with his clinical attachments, prepared him well for ITE’s rigorous environment. “One of the most valuable lessons I learned was not to let the words or actions of others affect me. Instead, I used them as motivation,” he says. His dedication has already borne fruit—Yaaqub achieved a perfect GPA of 4.0 in his first term and is on track for an accelerated programme.

Reflecting on his journey, Yaaqub encourages others to embrace perseverance, resilience, and diligence. “I could have easily given up after multiple rejections, but I didn’t. If you want something bad enough, push on,” he advises.

Witnessing Healthcare Excellence

Having experienced Singapore’s healthcare system firsthand, Yaaqub exemplify the transformative power of determination and opportunity.

Reflecting on his journey, Yaaqub shares:

“If you have a passion for serving and making a difference in people’s lives, a career in healthcare offers a deeply rewarding path where you can truly impact the well-being of others.”

Yaaqub echoes this sentiment:

“Every expert was once a beginner. We all have to start somewhere. Ask questions, stay curious, and never give up.”
