From Engineering to Operating Theatre Technician Associate: Career-switch at 60 years old

After 27 years in engineering, Vanu reached a crossroads. Caring for his special needs son and late father-in-law opened his eyes to what truly mattered—he craved a career with more purpose, one centred around people. Despite decades of experience in tunnelling and power generation, Vanu made the bold choice to switch to healthcare, taking a leap that would completely transform his life.

Overcoming Doubts: The Courage to Change at 60

Vanu’s decision to leave engineering behind wasn’t easy. Entering a new industry in his 60s raised concerns not just for himself, but also among his loved ones. Many questioned how he would adapt to an entirely different environment, where age and experience in an unrelated field might be viewed as limitations Switching industries at 60 brought concerns, not just for him but for his loved ones. People wondered how he would adapt to a completely new environment, especially at his age and with experience in an unrelated field.

But Vanu stayed committed to his decision. “Transitioning into healthcare at my age wasn’t without its challenges,” he admits. “But my experiences as a caregiver showed me the value of hands-on interaction and inspired me to take this leap.”

The Role of Training in His Transformation

To prepare for his new career, Vanu enrolled in the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing) with Perioperative Specialisation at HMI Institute. The 5.5-month course offered a structured pathway into the healthcare industry while providing the flexibility he needed to balance family responsibilities.

At first, doubts about job prospects loomed large. However, the supportive staff and lecturers at HMI Institute helped him stay focus. “Their guidance was invaluable,” Vanu recalls. “Instead of worrying about the uncertainties, I concentrated on learning and developing the skills I needed to succeed.”

Making a Difference in Healthcare

In October 2023, Vanu joined Singapore General Hospital as an Operating Theatre Technician Associate. This marked the beginning of a fulfilling new chapter. His adaptability, maturity, and dedication quickly earned him the respect of his colleagues and supervisors.

“Every day brings new learning experiences,” Vanu shares. “I find great fulfilment in helping others. This role aligns perfectly with my values and aspirations.”

His hard work didn’t go unnoticed. This year, Vanu received the Exemplary Contribution Award, given to graduates who demonstrate outstanding performance in their healthcare roles, nominated by their employer.
