Switching careers mid-way through life can seem like an overwhelming challenge. For Jumahat, a former Graphic Communication Manager at IKEA, the transition wasn’t just a career move—it was a purposeful step towards giving back to the community.
With years of experience in the creative industry, Jumahat always knew he would eventually embark on a different path once his financial and familial responsibilities were in place. Having paid off his home and with his daughter now in polytechnic, the timing felt right. But the question lingered: what’s next?
A Calling to Serve in Healthcare
“I’ve always admired professions that directly impact lives, like education and healthcare. They’re noble fields,” shares Jumahat. His personal experiences cemented his decision to pursue healthcare, specifically in therapy support.
Years ago, Jumahat’s mother had a stroke, but with therapy, she regained her ability to manage daily tasks. Jumahat himself had benefited from therapy after a torn ligament in his right shoulder. “Therapists make such a difference in the lives of patients—it’s inspiring,” he says.
Finding the Right Path
When Jumahat began exploring career options, he turned to online research, Googling “physiotherapy courses.” While universities like NUS and SIT offered physiotherapy programmes, the time commitment required to earn a degree wasn’t practical for Jumahat. “I couldn’t invest years in studying, so I looked for shorter, more focused courses,” he explains.
That’s when he discovered the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) at HMI Institute.
“The SCTP stood out because of its comprehensive approach to learning,” Jumahat recalls. The programme offered the flexibility he needed and provided hands-on training to prepare for the healthcare industry. Recognising the shorter duration and accessible learning format, he adjusted his expectations—from becoming a therapist to starting as a Therapy Assistant.
Thriving in a New Role
Since completing his training, Jumahat has been working as a Therapy Assistant at Woodlands Health. His training equipped him with foundational skills in both occupational therapy and physiotherapy, enabling him to provide excellent care to patients.
His approachable and friendly demeanour has earned the trust and praise of the patients he serves, while his colleagues value his dedication to the team. Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Jumahat’s creative background shines through. He has led workshops in leather crafting and photography for fellow occupational therapists and therapy assistants—contributing to the team’s well-being while sharing his unique talents.
His hard work didn’t go unnoticed. This year, Jumahat’s outstanding contributions were celebrated when he received the Exemplary Contribution Award. This award is given to graduates who demonstrate outstanding performance in their healthcare roles, nominated by their employer.
