For 23 years, Bony Sim devoted his life to a unique and meaningful profession as an embalmer and funeral director. It was a role that blended art and science, providing grieving families with dignity and respect during their most challenging times. However, as life evolved, so did Bony’s aspirations, leading him to a remarkable career change into the healthcare sector.
Embracing Change at 58 years old
Transitioning into healthcare at 58 was no easyfeat. The prospect of starting anew brought its share of uncertainties, including a temporary pause in income and the challenge of navigating unfamiliar territory. Despite these hurdles, Bony approached this new chapter with courage and determination, seeing it as an opportunity for growth and a chance to make a difference in another profound way.
Finding a New Calling in Healthcare
Bony enrolled in the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing) with Perioperative Specialisation at HMI Institute. This course was eye-opening, equipping him with both soft and practical skills essential for nursing. Clinical attachments provided hands-on experience, and one unforgettable moment highlighted the intersection of his past and present careers—performing a “last office” for a deceased patient, where his embalmer expertise complemented his newfound nursing skills.
A Smooth Transition with Support
The comprehensive training and guidance Bony received from HMI Institute reignited his passion for helping others. “Promoting health and nursing the sick is a continuation of making a positive impact in people’s lives, albeit in a different context,” he reflects. Upon graduating, Bony secured a role as a Day Care Assistant in Community Care. The warm welcome and appreciation from his supervisors and colleagues validated his decision, as they recognised the value of his training and experience.
Beyond his professional role, Bony’s new skills have also enriched his personal life, allowing him to better care for his ageing parents.
Advice for Aspiring Career Changers
Bony encourages anyone considering a mid-career transition to reflect deeply on their motivations, skills, and aspirations. “Some skills are transferable, and taking calculated risks can lead to growth,” he advises. “Seek guidance from mentors and career coaches. It’s okay to feel uncertain, but taking baby steps towards fulfilment is always worth it.”
