From Entrepreneur to Transforming Lives: How Elaine Found Purpose in Healthcare

Changing careers later in life can be intimidating, especially when it means leaving behind years of self-employment to start afresh in a completely new industry. But for many, this transition becomes a chance to find a renewed purpose. Elaine’s story is one such inspiring example of how resilience, determination, and the right support can lead to success in a completely different career path.

From Struggles to Success: Elaine’s Bold Career Move

After 16 years of running her own online business to rent out toys for young children, Elaine found herself at a crossroad. The flexibility of self-employment had been rewarding in the early years, as it allowed her to care for her 2 young children. However, with increased competition and the sudden global pandemic, her business began to face significant challenges. Realising that it was time for a change, she made the difficult decision to wind down her business two years ago and sought a new career that could offer meaning and purpose—a chance to give back to the community.

A Spark of Inspiration: How an Encounter with a Physiotherapist Changed Elaine’s Life

Elaine’s decision to pivot towards healthcare was born out of a deeply personal experience. “Last year, I accompanied a dear friend to her physiotherapy appointments. Seeing the therapist’s patience and caring support opened my eyes to the value of helping others directly,” she recalls. Inspired, Elaine decided that a career in healthcare could provide the meaning and purpose she had been seeking.

With her children now in university and living independently, Elaine felt it was the right time to embark on a new journey. After learning about the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) offered by HMI Institute, Elaine felt this could be the right opportunity for her and enrolled in the SCTP WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Therapy Support) in March 2024.

Back to School: How Elaine Found Joy in Learning Again Despite Initial Challenges

Returning to student life after years of being her own boss was no easy task. “I had to get used to being in an academic environment again. It was tough at first,” Elaine admits. She faced challenges—getting back into study habits and adjusting to classroom learning. But despite these hurdles, she found a renewed sense of motivation.

The camaraderie among her classmates was a major source of support. “We all came from different walks of life, but we supported each other through the ups and downs,” she shares. The bond she built with her peers, combined with the dedication of her instructors, made her learning experience enriching and enjoyable.

One module, in particular: “Implementing Interventions in Therapy Support”, left a lasting impact on Elaine. “In our practical assessments, we practised various scenarios like transferring patients with different mobility issues between a wheelchair and a bed. At first, I was unsure about how I would manage these tasks, but our instructor, Joel, was incredibly patient. His guidance and emphasis on empathy and care helped me to build my confidence,” she shares. This hands-on module helped Elaine and her classmates to gain valuable skills that they could apply in real-life settings.

Real-World Experience: Landing a Job During Training

Elaine’s 3-week clinical attachment at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital cemented her decision to pursue a career in healthcare. During her attachment, she was offered a Programme Coordinator role—a pivotal moment in her journey. “If it weren’t for the clinical attachment, I wouldn’t have been offered the role I have now. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to serve seniors in the community,” Elaine reflects.

In her new role, Elaine organises active ageing programmes and conducts home visits to engage and support seniors. “Seeing the seniors smile and stay active brings me immense job satisfaction. My colleagues have been fantastic, and I’ve learned so much from them,” she adds.

Lessons in Resilience: Elaine’s Advice for Career Changers

Elaine’s journey is proof that it’s never too late for a career change and make a meaningful impact. With an open mind, hard work and the right guidance, she successfully transitioned from being self-employed to finding fulfilment in healthcare.

Reflecting on her journey, Elaine says, “I believe we can all bounce back from challenges if we stay teachable, positive, and resilient. Together, we can make a positive impact in the community, one need at a time.”  Elaine is grateful for the support she received along the way. “I want to thank my family for their love and encouragement, and my HMI instructors and course mates for making this journey extraordinary and memorable.” she says.
