Many healthcare professionals reach a point where they ask themselves: How can I advance in my career? Will upskilling help me grow in my role? These are valid concerns, especially for those who have been working for years and want to have a career progression.
For Priadarsni A/P Selver Kumar, a Basic Care Assistant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, upskilling was the key to career progression. Her journey from supporting patient care to gaining nursing skills highlights how continuous learning opens doors and builds confidence.
A Passion for Healthcare and a New Challenge
Priadarsni wanted to deepen her skills and take on greater responsibilities. With the encouragement from her colleagues and mentors, she enrolled in the Job Redesign Programme, WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing) at HMI Institute.
“I wanted to enhance my nursing knowledge and be more confident in my role,” Priadarsni shares. “Thanks to my preceptor, Nursing Manager, and Nurse Clinician, I had the support to take this next step.”
Can I Study Again After So Many Years?
One of Priadarsni’s biggest concerns was returning to the classroom after years in the workforce.
“I was really nervous when my supervisor told me I had been selected for the programme. It had been years since I last studied, and I wasn’t sure if I could keep up. But my colleagues reassured me, saying I could do it. “ Despite her initial doubts, she embraced the challenge.
Applying New Skills
Priadarsni found the training at HMI Institute to be an enriching experience.
“The lecturers were knowledgeable and always ready to help. Beyond technical skills, I learned how to communicate effectively and solve problems in patient care— essential abilities in my role.”
Beyond theory, the hands-on training gave her the confidence to apply new skills at work. The structured learning environment and support from trainers helped her ease back into studying.
Despite initial nerves, the experience reignited her love for learning.
“The joy of learning again, attending lectures, and bonding with my classmates reminded me of my college days. It was fulfilling.”
Rediscovering The Joy of Learning Again
Returning to a learning environment brought back fond memories for Priadarsni.
“Going back to school, sitting in lectures, preparing for exams, and forming bonds with my classmates—it reminded me of my college days. I never expected upskilling to be such a rewarding experience.”
Many mid-career professionals hesitate to pursue further education, worrying about adjusting to student life again or feeling out of place among younger learners. However, Priadarsni’s experience proves that learning is for everyone, regardless of age or career stage.
With new skills and greater confidence, she is eager to continue her professional growth.
“I’m looking forward to upgrading myself and enhancing my nursing skills. This course has given me a strong foundation, and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead.”
A Heartfelt Thank You to Trainers and Classmates
Priadarsni extends her gratitude to her trainers and classmates for their support throughout her journey.
“To all the lecturers who guided us through Batch 01 of the WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing Support), thank you for your dedication. Your expertise and patience have made a significant difference in our learning.
And to my classmates—thank you for being part of this beautiful journey. Even though we come from different departments, we share a common goal—that’s what made this experience so special.”
