Overview
This module equips the healthcare support worker with the fundamental skills and knowledge required to perform work activities in perioperative setting (operating theatre).
Learning Objectives
- Operating Room Environment and Operating Room Personnel
- Discuss the physical environmental layout of the operating room, patient flow for surgical procedure
- Select and don correct surgical attire in operating room, assist surgical team in wearing tie-back style surgical gown
- Discuss and identify basic principles of aseptic technique used in operating room to reduce contamination, including 5 moments of hand hygiene
- Prepare Operating Room for Surgery
- Clean and disinfect operating room and surgical equipment in preparing first surgical case in operating room for surgery
- Perform safety check for changing of medical gases and equipment
- Prepare operating room according to operating list and adhere to standard and transmission based-precaution
- Prepare surgical equipment for patient undergoing surgery
- Discuss variations of basic surgical positioning and types of positioning aids in protecting body pressure points
- Transfer patient from bed to OR table using safety measures in positioning, moving and transporting surgical patient.
- Discuss the two basic patient circuits used in monopolar and bipolar electrosurgery
- Set up and operate electrosurgical unit (ESU) equipment
- Perform hand hygiene on the application of patient return electrode/ dispersive pad on patient
- Assess and report if there is any abnormality of patient skin conditions before apply and after remove patient return electrode
- Perform surgical suction unit safety check and changing of disposable suction liner when required
- Post-operative care for surgical patient and environmental cleaning
- Discuss terminal cleaning for operating room and blood spillage cleaning steps in operating room
- Handle and dispose general and hazardous waste in operating room
Course Outline
- Identify the correct surgical attire in various areas of operating department.
- Discuss the physical environment of the operating room and patient undergoing surgical procedure flow.
- Discuss qualities of the operating room support team
- Discuss and identify basic principles of aseptic technique used in operating room.
- Demonstrate assisting in wearing tie-back style surgical gown for surgical team.
- Recognise the types of work activities in preparing operating theatre for surgery.
- Discuss environmental control and damp dusting in operating theatre.
- Prepare operating room according to operating list (standard and transmission based-precaution)
- Assess and report if there is any abnormality of patient skin conditions before apply and after remove patient return electrode
- Remove patient return electrode before transfer surgical patient post operatively and reinstate electrosurgical unit
- Discuss the steps and perform changing of disposable suction liner when required.
- Perform end of surgical case cleaning for operating room equipment and environment according principle and sequence
- Handle and dispose general and hazardous waste in operating room
- Perform terminal cleaning for operating room equipment and environment
- Handle and dispose different types of biohazard waste

Entry Requirements
- Obtained at least a C6 pass at N-Level in any 1 subject or equivalent; OR
- Workplace Literacy & Numeracy (WPLN) Level 4 (Speaking, Listening, Reading & Numeracy) and Level 3 (Writing)
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a formal recognition through the award of a Statement(s) of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore.

The training is delivered via online learning (asynchronous & synchronous) and classroom sessions.
Total: 9.5 days
- Day 1: Asynchronous/Synchronous E-learning (8 hours)
- Day 2, 3, 4 & 5: Classroom training (32 hours)
