AAC Volunteer Foundational Training 1

Overview

This training covers Singapore’s ageing landscape, AACs’ goals and services, and profiles and challenges of seniors. Volunteers will learn confidentiality principles, effective communication skills using the BELIEF Framework, and handling interactions with potential dementia cases, preparing them to engage and support seniors effectively.

Course Outline

This training program is designed to prepare volunteers for effective engagement with seniors at Active Ageing Centres (AACs) in Singapore. The course covers:

  1. Eldercare and Community Care Landscape
    • Overview of Singapore’s ageing situation and strategies to embrace a super-aged society.
    • Importance of ageing in place, promoting active ageing, and addressing social isolation.
    • Roles of various community partners, with AACs serving as key nodes for senior engagement.
  2. AAC Service Offerings
    • Goals and objectives of AACs for supporting seniors.
    • Detailed look at AAC services and how volunteers can contribute.
  3. Senior Profiles and Challenges
    • Characteristics and challenges faced by robust, frail, and socially isolated seniors.
    • Common medical concerns and their impact on seniors’ participation in Active Ageing Programmes.
    • Principles of confidentiality and PDPA compliance, including proper consent for handling seniors’ information and photos.
  4. Effective Communication with Seniors
    • Application of the BELIEF Framework and roleplaying exercises.
    • Basic communication skills, rapport building, and awareness techniques for engaging seniors.
    • Handling potential interactions with persons with dementia, recognizing symptoms, and escalating to staff when necessary.


By completing this training, volunteers will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to support and enrich the lives of seniors in our community.

Target Audience

This training is designed for individuals who are passionate about supporting the elderly community, including volunteers, caregivers, and those interested in working with seniors at Active Ageing Centres (AACs).

Certification

Upon completion of the course, the participants will receive a Certificate of Participation from HMI Institute in partnership with AIC.
