Ren Ci Hospital Collaborates with HMI Institute of Health Sciences to Provide Therapist Trainer Services

Aim to equip therapist assistants with skills to cater to the needs of an aging population

Singapore, 29 October 2014 – Ren Ci Hospital and HMI Institute of Health Sciences (HMI Institute) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding forming a strategic partnership to jointly provide training to Therapy Assistant trainees undertaking the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications Higher Certificate in Therapy Services (TA course).

Under the terms of the collaboration, Ren Ci Hospital will deploy therapists and provide training facilities for HMI Institute trainees to practice and hone their skills in an authentic clinical learning environment. HMI Institute trainees will undergo theory and practical training for three of the 14-module TA course at Ren Ci Hospital in various therapy and patient procedures as well as implementation of a therapeutic care plan in accordance to HMI Institute training contents.

This collaboration leverages on the expertise and experience of Ren Ci’s team of healthcare professionals, in particularly the rehabilitation team, to deliver effective training for the therapy assistants-to-be to serve the elderly community.

“Against a backdrop of a rapidly ageing population, Singapore is facing a growing demand for physiotherapy in the geriatric setting. It is important to skew our training towards equipping future therapy assistants with the skills and knowledge to provide therapy services as a form of continual care to the seniors,” said Ms Loh Shu Ching, Chief Executive Officer of Ren Ci Hospital.

The blended learning model comprises a balanced mix of classroom learning and clinical attachment within the same day to interlace theoretical knowledge with practical skills.

This collaboration which was introduced in October last year provided the platform for the trainees to learn and practice their therapy skills through continual rehabilitation care at the Ren Ci community hospital and nursing home and Day Rehabilitation Centre.

“We are positive that our collaboration with Ren Ci Hospital to adopt workplace-based learning will enhance the quality of training which will in turn help to inject a steady stream of therapy assistants in the healthcare sector to meet the needs of the ageing society,” said Mr Tee Soo Kong, General Manager of HMI Institute.
