Mid-career individuals are stepping into healthcare with purpose, bringing with them life experience, resilience, and a strong desire to make a difference.
Featured on Vasantham Tamil Seithi, three learners, Ms Vijaya Bama D/O Vetrivel, Ms Nachammai W/O Alagappan and Mr Vanu S/O Subramaniam, shared how they made the transition into healthcare at different stages of life through the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP).
From Personal Experience to Purposeful Care
At 42, Vijaya was inspired to join healthcare after witnessing the care her father received during illness. Now training at HMI Institute, she hopes to provide the same level of support to others and their families.
Building New Skills for a Second Career
At 53, Nachammai made the shift from an administrative role into healthcare. Recognising the need for specialised skills, she enrolled in training to equip herself for patient care, supported by the SkillsFuture Mid-Career Training Allowance to ease financial commitments during her transition.
Turning Life Experience into Meaningful Impact
With 27 years in the engineering industry, Vanu, aged 64, chose to pursue a new path in healthcare. Now working at Singapore General Hospital, he draws from her personal experiences caring for family members to support patients and families facing similar challenges.
Supporting Mid-Career Transitions into Healthcare
Their journeys reflect a shared belief: it is never too late to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully. As Singapore’s population ages, the healthcare sector continues to offer opportunities for individuals to build purposeful second careers.
Through SCTP, learners receive structured training, industry-relevant skills, and financial support to make their transition into healthcare more accessible.
