After decades in leadership roles with multinational companies, Timothy Tan retired following a company restructuring. His career had taken him across Asia, Europe and the United States, where he managed Operations, Quality Assurance, Supplier and Customer Quality in fast-paced environments.
Like many people entering retirement, he could have viewed it as the closing chapter of his working life. Instead, he began thinking about what came next.
“I read about people in their 50s and 60s who successfully switched to healthcare and found real job satisfaction and life fulfilment,” he recalls. “I wanted to give it a try since I am a ‘young senior’.”
That decision led him to enrol in the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing) with Perioperative Specialisation at HMI Institute. Today, he works as a Patient Experience Associate at Outram Community Hospital, supporting patients in a healthcare environment that is very different from the corporate world he once knew.
Starting Again, But Not from Zero
Although healthcare was unfamiliar, Timothy did not believe he was starting from zero.
Over the years, he had learnt to solve problems systematically, maintain quality standards, work under pressure and collaborate with people across different functions and cultures. Those experiences became valuable foundations as he adjusted to a new profession.
At the same time, he knew that healthcare would require a different mindset. Every interaction has a direct impact on patients, making continuous learning, teamwork and attention to detail essential.
Choosing to Try Something New
Making a career transition is rarely without uncertainty.
For Timothy, one concern was whether he would be able to meet the practical demands of working in healthcare. After spending decades in a completely different industry, he also wondered how long it would take to adapt.
Rather than focusing on the unknown, he focused on the opportunity.
“If you never try, you will never know.”
That simple belief gave him the confidence to pursue a completely different path.
Where Learning Became Real
For Timothy, one of the most valuable aspects of the SCTP was the opportunity to experience healthcare in real settings through his clinical attachments.
“The SCTP by HMI Institute gave me the needed exposure and prepared me mentally and practically,” he says. “The certification also gave me a better chance of being selected during job interviews.”
During his clinical attachments, he observed how different teams worked together across hospital wards, operating theatres and sterile processing departments. Seeing these environments first hand gave him a much clearer understanding of how each role contributes to safe and effective patient care.
The experience bridged the gap between classroom learning and day-to-day practice, giving him greater confidence as he prepared to enter the workforce.
Healthcare Required Him to Work Differently
Starting work in healthcare brought new challenges.
“It may take about two months to adapt to working in a healthcare environment,” Timothy reflects. “It can be very dynamic since we are caring for others.”
The transition reinforced the importance of staying curious, thinking critically and continuing to learn, even after completing formal training.
Looking back, he is especially grateful to the HMI Institute instructors who generously shared their knowledge and practical experiences.
“I wish I had reflected more deeply on some of the lessons they shared,” he says. In many settings, mistakes can become learning opportunities. In healthcare, it is equally important to learn from the experience of others and oneself and prevent errors that could affect patient safety.”
That reflection continues to shape how he approaches his work today.
A Different Kind of Fulfilment
For Timothy, the biggest reward has not simply been changing careers. It has been discovering a different way to make a meaningful contribution.
“There is fulfilment when you are able to support someone who needs help.”
His journey shows that moving into healthcare is not about leaving years of experience behind. It means building on those experiences while developing new knowledge and skills to care for others.
For anyone considering a career transition, his advice is simple:
“Change is the only constant. Give yourself a chance to pursue something new. Gain new knowledge and useful skills in life.”
