“I realised that I enjoy patient-facing work, so I decided to develop my career further in healthcare.”
For Angeline Yeo, moving into healthcare was not a path she had planned from the beginning. It was one she discovered through training and first-hand experience in the sector.
Exploring Healthcare as a New Career
Before entering healthcare, Angeline spent about two years as a Regulations and Safety Executive, where she managed regulatory compliance and workplace safety requirements.
“After I was retrenched, I first explored the workplace safety field and upgraded myself in safety. Later, I decided to explore healthcare because I enjoy working with people and providing service.”
Angeline subsequently enrolled in the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) at HMI Institute. Through the programme, she gained hands-on exposure during her clinical attachment and clinic experience. It was this experience that helped her identify an interest in patient-facing work and consider building a longer-term career in healthcare.
Learning About Healthcare Operations
The transition also meant becoming familiar with how healthcare operations work.
“The training at HMI Institute gave me a good foundation in healthcare operations. I learnt about patient registration, appointment scheduling, documentation, billing and front-counter service.”
Beyond the operational knowledge, Angeline took away skills and practices that she continues to apply today.
“Although my current UEMS role is in visitor management, the training helped me understand the importance of professionalism, communication, following procedures and good service. I find these skills useful when dealing with visitors and working with my team.”
Building Her Career in Healthcare
Today, Angeline is an Assistant Team Leader with UEMS, supporting Visitor Management Services at Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
“My day-to-day work involves staff deployment, coordinating the operations, making sure procedures and service standards are followed, and handling visitor enquiries. I also support the team with operational updates and guidance. This role has given me valuable experience working in a healthcare environment.”
For Angeline, this is also an opportunity to continue building towards the area of healthcare that interests her most.
“My plan is to build a long-term career in healthcare, especially in patient service. I want to continue learning, gain more hands-on experience with patients and develop my skills. As I gain more experience, I hope to take on more responsibilities and grow with the organisation.”
