Shin Min Daily News: 女商人转行医疗业 追寻有意义人生路

Our alumni, Ms Esther Yeo and Mr Goh Teck Peng, were featured in Shin Min Daily News (新明日报), where they shared their inspiring mid-career transitions into healthcare.

Esther spent nearly 20 years in the seafood trading industry, but her father’s late-stage pancreatic cancer diagnosis prompted her to re-evaluate her career and life goals. Moved by the care her father received, she enrolled in HMI Institute’s (SCTP) WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Nursing) with Perioperative Specialisation course. Through the programme’s mix of theory, practical training, and hospital attachment, she gained the skills and confidence to support patients undergoing treatment.

Teck Peng, a former finance professional of over 30 years, decided at age 57 to slow down his pace of life and pursue a meaningful career in patient care. He completed HMI Institute’s WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare Support (Therapy Support) and now works at Jurong Community Hospital, assisting patients with rehabilitation and offering encouragement throughout their recovery.

HMI Institute’s General Manager, Mr Lee Mun Choon, highlighted the growing need for healthcare professionals and the institute’s role in training over 400,000 learners, sharing that it is never too late to start a meaningful career where every action contributes to the well-being of others.

Their journeys show that career change is possible at any stage of life. With the right training, mindset, and support, individuals can find fulfilment and make a tangible difference in others’ lives.
